We Believe In Coffee That Tastes Like Coffee.
What started out as a hobby has turned into an adventure and a passion. An adventure to start a small coffee roasting company in one of the coolest, hippest, and most supportive communities on Vancouver Island, or anywhere for that matter, and a passion to create a really good cup of great tasting coffee. No gimmicks, no blends, no adding disgusting flavors, just a cup of coffee that tastes like coffee should, rich, full bodied and delicious.
Welcome to Grumpy Old Man Coffee! We hope you will enjoy what we have to offer, but we really don’t care if you don’t because we are, well, Grumpy, obviously!
Dark Roast
Dark Roast coffees are very dark brown, even close to black color. The beans are characterized by drawing out oil that gloss the surface. Coffee made from a Dark Roast has a robust, full body, taking on a very bold and smoky taste. Other names for a dark roast coffee include French Roast, Italian Roast, Continental Roast, or even Espresso Roast.
We sell 2 dark roasted coffees; El Salvador – Bourbon Natural (darkest) and Costa Rica – Heredia (a little lighter).
Medium Roast
Medium roasted beans start to take on a bit of the taste from the roasting process, they carry much more of a balanced flavor with a medium amount of caffeine. A Medium is roasted until just before the second crack. A medium roast can also be referred to as American Roast, Breakfast Roast, or City Roast.
We have 2 medium roast coffees; Guatemala – Antigua and Mexico – Chiapas HG (HG = high grown)
Espresso
Espresso beans and coffee beans are not different things. Espresso is a type of coffee. More specifically, it’s a method of brewing coffee that uses high water pressure and finely ground beans to make a small, concentrated shot (the term also refers to the shot itself). While darkly roasted beans have historically been more popular in Italy, where espresso was invented, any kind of coffee bean from any origin and at any roast level can be used to make espresso.
While we do not have an Espresso blend specifically, we highly recommend our El Salvador ~ Bourbon Natural for your espresso coffee!
Decaf
Decaffeinated Coffee:
Decaffeination is the act of removing caffeine from coffee beans, cocoa, tea leaves and other caffeine-containing materials.
This can be done with chemicals, solvents, or with water. Our decaf coffee is processed using water so there are no added chemicals and all of the original flavor of the coffee remains. It is 97.9 – 99.9% caffeine free.
Our Vision
Our vision is to produce a really great, single origin, small batch roasted coffee that tastes like coffee!
Our Mission
We use green coffee beans that are ethically sourced from some of the greatest coffee producing nations in the world to produce a coffee that is knock your socks off delicious. Roasted in small batches to provide consistency and freshness. No added flavors or other crap, just a straight up amazing cup of coffee.
Our Values
We strive to use only ethically sourced, sustainably-traded coffee that is produced in an environmentally conscience way. Our roasting method produces very little environmental impact, and our packaging is 100% recyclable.
If you are local, we can fill your reusable container to reduce packaging.
What is sustainably traded coffee?
All of our beans are highest quality and Sustainably Traded: which means it is, coffee that is grown and marketed for its sustainability and includes coffees that are certified as organic, fair trade, and Rainforest Alliance. We use only 100% Arabica beans.
We are committed to selling only the highest quality, sustainably-traded coffee.
What is Single Origin Coffee?
Single origin refers to a coffee that is sourced from one single region or country. This means that the coffee has not been blended with beans from a different country or region.
Single Estate takes it one step further and refers to coffee that is from a specific farm. Since its origin can be traced to the farm, there is assurance that the beans will be consistent and of the highest quality. Sometimes it can be broken down even further into micro lots, which are beans that are from a specific lot on a specific farm.
When coffee is labeled as single origin or single estate it denotes quality. A single origin coffee is a much higher quality coffee than a blend, and a single estate is even more so. Flavour profiles are specific to growing regions, so with a single origin coffee you are getting a full, rich, flavour profile from one specific region.
